Item ID: 2161 - Chelsea 8” USLHS Clock for Ashcroft Mfg. Co., The Charles Ward Engineering Works and the “Greenbrier”. Time only. The signed Chelsea movement has serial number 7541. A great clock with superb provenance. The dial tells the story of the clock. Chelsea Clock Co. sold the clock to The Ashcroft Mfg. Co. for The Charles Ward Engineering Works, Charleston, W. VA. who built and delivered the Greenbrier on June 20, 1924. The Greenbrier was a paddlewheel steamer which served as a river tender for the United States Lighthouse Service. She was 164’ 6” in length, 32” 6” in beam with a maximum draft of 4’. The steamship operated on the Ohio River from it’s base in Cincinnatti, OH. The Greenbrier tended navigational aids on the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers until decommissioned on 1947. The clock is in very fine original unrestored condition. A fine quality, ca. 1962, model of the Greenbrier is in the Smithsonian Collection. Below is a link to a video of J. Edgar Hoover boarding and leaving the Greenbrier commemorating the opening of the Ohio River channel in 1929. The Greenbrier is shown about 15 minutes into the video. Neat stuff! It’s amazing how provenance creates a special connection to a piece. Email me if you have questions. ![]()
